I. Gyles meets the AU Loris
II. Loris and Roca are confused by themselves

I.
Gyles: *after working extensive shifts in engineering, decides to head to the mess hall and get something to eat* *Also, new uniform! The vests are much more convenient for holding tools*
AU!Loris: *already in the mess hall, looking for people to talk to, seated at a table with a plate of food and Bajoran coffee*
Gyles: *On the one hand I could save my skin and not completely embarrass myself... but on the other hand, this is the First Officer* Oh... Of course. *sits down*
AU!Loris: *chill dude, she doesn't bite* *smiles* Now, you look familiar but I'm not quite certain if I'm right on this. Remind me of your name?
Gyles: Ensign Richard Gyles, sir. *smile=good* *relaxes slightly but still maintains composure*
AU!Loris: *slight confused look, then covers it up* Ah, yes, of course. So I was right. How are you, Ensign Gyles?
Gyles: Oh... I'm okay. I've been meeting the alternate versions of certain crew members, mine was... unsettling to say the least.
AU!Loris: *yeah I bet* Oh? Please, do tell. *spoons up a bite of her food and noms, keeping her eyes on him*
Gyles: Well... a defining moment on the USS Euphrates for me was... different in that universe. Instead of a trellium leakage *maintain composure, maintain composure, maintain composure* it was a mutagenic virus and he was changed rather /horrifically/...
AU!Loris: But he's still able to do his job. Does it concern you that your life could have been so different?
Gyles: I expected that, I was somewhat unprepared for the fact that he is partially transparent. *e_e*
AU!Loris: Ah. I can see how that would be unsettling.
Gyles: May I ask, what about yours, Commander? *hesitant*
AU!Loris: My counterpart, you mean?
Gyles: Eh... Yes, Sir.
AU!Loris: Oh, well, we have our differences. She's very austere. I like to think that I'm not. A little too concerned with certain matters, I think. *sips her drink like "but that's none of my business"*
Gyles: Ah... I see.
AU!Loris: It's been very interesting getting to know her. Have you gotten to know transparent Gyles?
Gyles: Somewhat... He's more... reserved... a little unfriendly at times.
AU!Loris: Perhaps a little standoffish because of your differences?
Gyles: Maybe... *hasn't considered this*
AU!Loris: It might be an explanation.
Gyles: *thinks* I've... never thought of this before... *resolves to meet up later* Certainly given me something to think about.
AU!Loris: A new perspective will do that.
Gyles: Do you know why your counterpart is different, or acts different?
AU!Loris: Oh, yes, but I think that's her business to sort out.
Gyles: Right, right. *looks down* Sorry.
AU!Loris: Oh, it's not your fault. To be perfectly honest, I feel like I have to sort it out as well, and she's been through a lot. *pause* *or maybe I have, I'm not sure* But it's not really something to be discussing with a member of her own crew. *smiles a bit smugly*
Gyles: I apologize, I've been growing more like this lately. *or, have I always been? No I haven't... Wait...*
AU!Loris: *wow he totally missed that he's been talking to the wrong Loris* It's quite alright.
Gyles: *Okay, that's helpful, burning shame levels: decreasing* Okay, good.
AU!Loris: I think both crews are experiencing that to some degree.
Gyles: I... have noticed some odd behavior lately... Just bits and pieces however.
AU!Loris: It's true, it isn't a wholistic problem, nor is it consistent.
Gyles: In that case, the faster we separate our universes the better... *grim expression*
AU!Loris: Perhaps, yes.
Gyles: *suddenly occurs to him* Which eh... Which Legacy do you belong to?
AU!Loris: *ah now the question comes* The one that isn't yours.
Gyles: *oops* Oh... *pales* Uh... *thought he was talking to Prime!Loris*
AU!Loris: *small grin* Something wrong, Ensign?
Gyles: Uh... I... Er... *stammering* I... I thought you were the Commander from my universe this entire time.
AU!Loris: So I gathered.
Gyles: Uh... Right... Sorry about that.
AU!Loris: What for?
Gyles: The way I've been acting... Never mind. *shaaaaaaame*
AU!Loris: I don't understand.
Gyles: Never mind... *buuuurning shaaaaame*
AU!Loris: Very well. *sips her drink*
Gyles: *embarrased, and possibly red in the face* I... I should probably go, I'm not making my situation any better.
AU!Loris: If you wish. *totally clueless, what did she do Oo* I don't mind your presence in the least.
Gyles: I... Never mind. I thought I'd embarrassed myself.
AU!Loris: *shrug* I didn't quite think so.
Gyles: Okay. That's helpful to know. *settling down slightly*
AU!Loris: You thought you were in trouble because you were talking to the wrong Loris? *incredulous*
Gyles: Not... quite... It's a little complicated, and I should probably work on that too...
AU!Loris: All right then.
Gyles: Maybe I should go anyway... *doesn't really know what to say*
AU!Loris: It's up to you.
Gyles: Right... *picks up his stuff* Good day then, Commander. *feeling miiiighty awkward*
AU!Loris: *cheerfully* Have a good day, Ensign. *^^*
Gyles: *waves* Thank you... You too... *walks over to his original destination table*
AU!Loris: *stays sitting and enjoys her food*

II.
Roca: *in an empty rec room, for it is a quieter place than the mess hall, with a bottle of kanar, sitting at a table in front of a big screen that shows a star chart of the night sky over her home region on Cardassia Prime* *the sky is changing in real-time, so really slow, but she isn't paying attention to the stars, anyway, but sighs, with her hands supporting her chin*
Loris: *sort of having the same idea with being someplace not the lounge or mess hall, opens the rec room door and steps in, only to find The Cardassian* Oh. Sorry. *dnw*
Roca: *was about to lie her head down on the table because she's alone and depressed and why bother, when the door opens and gives her a reason to care* Ah. *turns her head* Commander. *thinks for a second, then beckons her in*
Loris: *but Cardassian* *but Cardassian okay? So confusion* You're certain?
Roca: Yes. Why would I not be? Keeps me from emptying this bottle alone. Want some kanar, or...? *still no alcohol? Want to try again?*
Loris: *shrugs* I guess so. *steps in, letting the door shut behind her and heads over to Roca, sitting beside her*
Roca: Rough week? *looks around for hints to a second glass because she didn't bring more than one*
Loris: It seems like it for you.
Roca: *snorts* Can a woman not enjoy a lonely drink without something being wrong?
Loris: *gestures at the screen* If you wanted to see any stars, you could have gone to the Observation Deck.
Roca: The O-Deck's not lonely enough. *grins humourlessly, stands and rises her glass* Cheers! *takes a sip, then turns around to replicate a second glass – with kanar – and returns* Here. Already filled, because I'm nice.
Loris: *takes the glass but doesn't touch it* Thank you.
Roca: Welcome. *sits back down* It's the night sky over Cardassia.
Loris: It's pretty.
Roca: Mh. *nods* Before I came on board, your precious Cardassian officer showed me the pretty *said sarcastically* Federation space at the O-Deck, talking something about my children seeing more than *nods to the screen* this. I don't understand, I think /this/ is perfectly sufficient.
Loris: I'd say it is. Federation space is a little overwhelming.
Roca: *snorts* Are you homesick?
Loris: Always.
Roca: Then why are you still here? *tilts her head and turns on her seat to study Loris' face with amused curiosity*
Loris: I don't want to be seen as giving up.
Roca: So it's because you care for the opinion of others.
Loris: Too much.
Roca: Are you all right?
Loris: Of course. Are you?
Roca: /I/ am not the one not drinking and agreeing to everything I say.
Loris: I'm not drinking.
Roca: Well, yes. Why?
Loris: I'm not in the mood to drink yet.
Roca: All right. Suit yourself. *pours herself some more kanar in*
Loris: Do you do this often?
Roca: *snorts* Do I look that professional? *puts the bottle down* I've been a barkeeper once.
Loris: I mean sit here and look at your stars.
Roca: Ah. It's the first time. It took quite some time to find a program that would let me run it. *or so she claims, maybe she's just not used to the computer system ^^°*
Loris: So you're homesick too.
Roca: Aye. *drinks and looks at the sky* But that I'm often. It's something else this time, but I can't put my finger on it.
Loris: Stronger homesickness?
Roca: *shakes her head*
Loris: *takes a sip of her kanar* You'll probably figure it out.
Roca: I was about to say. If /I/ haven't yet, how do /you/ want to know?
Loris: I'm curious?
Roca: That doesn't make you a seer.
Loris: I didn't know I thought I was one.
Roca: See? There's so much you can learn from me.
Loris: Why do you think I keep you around?
Roca: To make fun of me, apparently. *sips kanar*
Loris: Was I making fun of you?
Roca: You tell me. And then I'll tell you if it's right or wrong.
Loris: *snorts* I know the answer to that already.
Roca: Then maybe you're finally learning from the master. What is it? *folds her hands under her chin and looks at her expectantly*
Loris: If I say no, you'll tell me I'm wrong, if I say yes, you'll tell me I'm right.
Roca: *snorts* You're frustrating. Just tell me what it was.
Loris: I wasn't making fun of you.
Roca: Then what?
Loris: *shrugs* I don't know what I did to make you think I was making fun of you. *sips kanar* I thought I was trying to talk to you.
Roca: *snorts* I don't think you really keep me around to learn from me.
Loris: Don't I?
Roca: *gives her a /look/* Now you're going to tell me that's /also/ not meant as making fun of me, right?
Loris: *gives her head a small shake* I'm sorry, I don't know what it meant.
Roca: And now you apologised. You're getting stranger and stranger, Loris.
Loris: I agree.
Roca: Mhm, that brings us back to my former question: You're also not all right. *delightfully*
Loris: I'm all right enough.
Roca: For what?
Loris: I'm not sure yet.
Roca: I don't know, but I'd be careful if one of /my/ officers talked like that.
Loris: You'll be careful anyway, since I'm talking like this.
Roca: Do you say I'm in danger? *danger~*
Loris: *snorts* If I haven't attacked you yet, I don't think I will now.
Roca: You don't think! So you might. *sounding more cheerful than she probably should*
Loris: Would it make you feel better if I did?
Roca: *leans back* Not particularly.
Loris: I didn't think so.
Roca: *shakes her head* No, it would make a lot of trouble. We'd have to explain ourselves in front of your Captain. Maybe even in front of our governments.
Loris: *makes a face* Explaining myself to Starfleet. I'd rather not.
Roca: *gives a laugh* Glad Starfleet didn't ask you to until now, eh? The least you need is them finding out who you really are.
Loris: Who is that?
Roca: *shrugs* How should I know? I'm good, but not /that/ good. Meaning: I can tell when you lie, but I can't tell what it is you're hiding. To be blunt, right now you don't seem too sure of yourself, either.
Loris: Well, that's right. I'm very sure of nothing.
Roca: *humourless smile* That, for example, was the truth. *mostly trolling, actually*
Loris: You really are clever, aren't you? *half-hearted sarcasm*
Roca: Was there any doubt? *sips kanar*
Loris: Not really.
Roca: But you /are/ of my universe, aren't you?
Loris: I'm nearly 80% sure that I am.
Roca: Where's the other 20% from?
Loris: The other Loris, probably.
Roca: Ah. Talked to her?
Loris: Yes.
Roca: I haven't. *unless you are her* But I've heard you two are quite similar.
Loris: *dry laugh* We look similar.
Roca: And that's it? She's not First Officer with a science background, and Bajoran?
Loris: She's that, too.
Roca: There, quite similar. Others are from Ensign to Lieutenant Commander and in Counselling. Or not even themselves, but their long-dead lovers. Or not crippled.
Loris: *opens her mouth to protest that nobody is crippled, then closes it again when she realizes* Oh. *drinks more of her kanar* I'm sorry.
Roca: Why? I'm happy for her. *drinks*
Loris: But you're not her.
Roca: No. And for some weird reason I contemplate my life. *snorts*
Loris: Shocking.
Roca: Mhm. I've talked to /her/. *takes a sip* She still has a chance to start a family. I guess she thinks about it. Retiring, living on Cardassia. *shrugs* I could do the same. There are options. Orphans aren't worth a damn on my homeworld, most of them would consider themselves lucky to be adopted.
Loris: Would you pass them off as your own?
Roca: Why would I do that? *confused* I'd give them my name, that's good enough.
Loris: I thought maybe since having your own children is so important, you'd hide the fact that you can't have your own.
Roca: I've made sacrifices for Cardassia. I won't cloud that fact. But, ah, it will be hard to find a father for adopted children, when they can just find a wife who'd give them „something better“. *shrugs* But being a single mother didn't frighten mine.
Loris: *finishes her glass of kanar* I see.
Roca: *nods towards the bottle with original Cardassian kanar in it* Have more.
Loris: I may in a bit, thank you.
Roca: I'll take care of you. *strangely serious, yet casual*
Loris: I know.
Roca: *blinks, then grins humourlessly again* As I said: Strange.
Loris: I won't deny that. *but that was actually all me. I think*
Roca: *doesn't mean it's less strange* *unless you start to like me* *I won you over ;P* Mhm. *drinks*
Loris: *I don't even know anymore @_@* *stays quiet*
[And so they sat in silence for a while, until they found something else to talk about and eventually parted ways.]
